SOUTHWEST REGIONAL OFFICE
OVERVIEW
Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Southwest Regional Office serves as a resource for Latino students and their parents to demystify the college preparation and financial aid process. It conducts Town Hall Meetings and Steps for Success Saturdays, participates in college fairs, informs high school counselors and other educational leaders about its initiatives, and serves as a local contact for HSF Scholars and the HSF Scholar Chapters throughout the region. The office also works with HSF alumni and others in the area to support Latino education. In addition, the office raises financial support for scholarships and programs from regional and local corporations, businesses, foundations and individuals.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DEMOGRAPHICS
According to 2004 Census Bureau statistics, California has the largest Hispanic population in the United States. Of the 12.2 million Hispanics living in the state, more than 4.5 million reside in Los Angeles County, which makes it the most heavily Hispanic populated county in the country. The Hispanic population of Southern California is 41 percent. In its 32-year history, HSF has awarded nearly 24,000 scholarships to students in California, totaling more than $63.5 million. During the 2006-2007 academic year, HSF awarded 1,157 scholarships to students in California, totaling more than $7.6 million.
MISSION
HSF’s Southern California Regional Office collaborates with school districts and community-based organizations to provide comprehensive support and services that help students and their families understand the steps necessary to successfully prepare, apply and enroll in a college or university; research and apply for scholarships (including HSF scholarships); and graduate with a baccalaureate degree. It is the mission of HSF to double the rate of Latinos earning college degrees to 18 percent by the year 2010. HSF has launched several outreach programs that provide the community with direct access to information and tools necessary to navigate the college application and financial aid processes.
Through the San Francisco HSF headquarters, the Southwest Regional Office offers the following programs:
- Alumni Network
- Parental Engagement Program
- Peer Counseling Program
- Scholar Chapter Network
- Steps for Success Saturdays
- Town Hall Meetings
