Saludos A few months ago we announced the launch of our new initiative, Generation 1st Degree which aims to ensure that every Latino household in the U.S. will have at least one college graduate. By helping at least one person in each household earn a college degree so they can, in turn, motivate and help others in the family to seek the same achievement. We are excited to share that HSF has received two generous awards to fully delve into this goal. Thanks to the Goizueta Foundation, HSF will embark on a six year program within the state of Georgia to increase the number of Latinos who enroll and ultimately graduate from college. Additionally, Gilbert and Jackie Cisneros, winners of a multi-state lottery, announced their contribution to Generation 1st Degree by supporting a program in their hometown, Pico Rivera, CA. Together with HSF, the Cisneros are creating a scholarship and community engagement campaign called “Generation 1st Degree Pico Rivera”. Through this project, the goal is to work toward a college degree in every Pico Rivera household. We are thrilled to continue these focused efforts around Generation 1st Degree and hope that the momentum continues. Other exciting news is the launch of an alumni mentor program during the 2011-12 academic year. With support from the Citi Foundation, HSF will pair 200 college freshmen with alumni mentors. The first year of college can be especially challenging and we hope to ease that transition for students through alumni mentors. We are looking for 200 alumni to serve as mentors in the upcoming year. If you are interested in participating in this effort, please make sure you are registered with the HSF Alumni Network and indicate ‘Provide career guidance and mentorship to Latino college students’ as an interest. As plans get underway, we will reach out to you and provide additional information.
