DELOITTE INVESTS OVER $64,000 IN HSF COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AND SCHOLAR CHAPTER NETWORK
San Francisco, CA January 2007–The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education, announced that it has received a grant of more than $64,000 from Deloitte. The grant will support the HSF/Deloitte College Scholarship Program and the HSF Scholar Chapter Network.
The HSF/Deloitte College Scholarship Program will award scholarships to outstanding Latino students already enrolled in four-year institutions who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and strong financial need.
The HSF Scholar Chapter Network is a national initiative designed to improve college retention, promote academic excellence and build leadership skills among college students. In addition, many HSF Scholar Chapters match Hispanic students with former HSF scholars and other mentors to provide support during college and improve career prospects after graduation. There are currently 26 chapters located on campuses throughout the nation, serving nearly 2,500 students during this current academic year.
"We are grateful to Deloitte for its continued and generous support,” said Christopher E. Jones, HSF Chief Operating Officer. "This support further demonstrates Deloitte’s recognition of and commitment to a highly educated Hispanic workforce."
Jones pointed out that, although HSF awarded more than $25 million in scholarships last year to more than 4,600 students, the need among Hispanic young people continues to outpace HSF resources. Limited resources force HSF to deny scholarships to an equal number of scholarship applicants with an average GPA of 3.55. This new grant will help HSF in its mission to double the rate of Latinos who have acquired a college degree by the year 2010, Jones added.
