Evelyn Lucero recalls hard times when she and her husband struggled to provide for their four children. But they persevered, emphasizing the importance of higher education, along the way. Their emphasis and guidance paid off, and all four children became first-generation college students who have earned bachelor’s degrees—two at California State University, Fullerton, one at California State University, Long Beach, and one at the University of California, Los Angeles. The latter, her youngest son, also completed an MBA at the University of Southern California.
“I made it my goal to serve as the best possible role model, to support my children’s educational goals, and to provide them with unconditional love,” she says, adding, “I am ecstatic and proud of their diligence.”
Before joining HSF, Evelyn worked ten years at Alaska Air Cargo, starting as a customer service agent, before becoming a lead, and eventually moving up to supervisor. In that role, she handled manifests for international and domestic flights, was certified to manage dangerous goods, processed US customs paperwork, and supervised the office and warehouse staff.
Today, at HSF, she is a coordinator in the Fulfillment Group, where she manages inventory and demand projection for the online HSF Shop, and handles product procurement and fulfillment to support HSF’s programs and events throughout the year.
Reflecting on her role at HSF, she says, “I am passionate about utilizing education as a tool of empowerment. Being a member of the HSF team has given me the opportunity and privilege of helping families demystify the pathway toward college, and dismantle the financial barriers that may sometimes inhibit a student’s ability to access higher education.”
