Mr. Calderón was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, the middle of nine children. His parents are from Mexico–his mother, from Chihuahua; his father, from Durango. He is grateful to his parents for maintaining a loving home and preparing him for higher education by instilling a strong work ethic in their children.

When a high school guidance counselor suggested he attend vocational school instead of college, his reaction was, “I can do more than this.”

Determined to pursue a higher education, he applied to, and attended, the University of Texas at El Paso and earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. In addition to a full course load, he worked full-time. He now views that challenge as a plus, recalling that it actually gave him a better appreciation for his school work and made the subject matter more meaningful.

Selected by American Honda Motor Company to be a National Trainee, he joined the company the same year he graduated. Since then, for over 23 years, he has held various positions, from sales analyst to senior district sales manager, as well as assistant management roles in eBusiness, Market Operations, Market Planning, and other divisions.

Today, he is Senior Zone Sales Manager for the company’s Acura Division. As such, he leads Acura dealers in the Southwest Region and the company’s Zone team in meeting their sales and market share objectives. He has also been responsible for successfully launching the Acura Generation 3 image and “Acura Experience” initiatives for improving business and customer experience. Additionally, he supports dealers, helping them increase their year-over-year sales.

An avid supporter of HSF, he is a member of the Dallas Advisory Board. In this capacity, he has had the opportunity to attend various HSF activities and says he has found the testimonials from Alumni and current Scholars to be particularly inspiring. He adds that it has been moving to learn directly “how an HSF scholarship has helped them change their lives forever.”

Mr. Calderón has this advice for students about to graduate college and/or enter a profession: “Work smart by having a plan, then outwork everyone.  Also, don’t let someone’s preconceived notions about you discourage you from reaching your dreams.”
