Javier Calderón was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, the middle of nine children. His parents are from Mexico—his mother from Chihuahua and his father from Durango—and he shares that he is grateful to them for maintaining a loving home, and preparing him for higher education by instilling in him a strong work ethic.

When a high school guidance counselor suggested he attend a vocational school rather than fulfill his goal of attending college, he remained determined to continue his pursuit of a higher education. He enrolled at the University of Texas at El Paso, where in addition to a full course load studying Business Administration, he worked full-time. He now views that challenge as an advantage, recalling that it gave him a deeper appreciation for his school work, and made the subject matter more meaningful.

The year he graduated with his bachelor’s degree, he joined American Honda Motor Company as a National Trainee. During the subsequent 26 years, he has built his career at the company, working his way up from Sales Analyst to Senior District Sales Manager, before moving into assistant management roles in a variety of Honda divisions, including Market Operations, Market Planning, and Zone Sales. In 2006, he began working in Zone Management, which has remained his focus for the last several years.

Today, he is Senior Zone Sales Manager for the company’s Acura Division. As such, he leads Acura dealers in the Southwest Region, and the company’s Zone team, in meeting their sales and market share objectives. He has also been responsible for successfully launching the Acura Generation 3 Image and “Acura Experience” initiatives, for improving business and customer experience.

An avid supporter of HSF, he is a member of the Advisory Council in Dallas, Texas. In this capacity, he has had the opportunity to attend various HSF events, and says he has found the testimonials from Alumni and current Scholars to be particularly inspiring. He adds that it has been moving to learn directly “how an HSF scholarship has helped them change their lives forever.”

Javier believes that HSF can empower students to achieve seemingly impossible goals. He advises students about to embark on a professional career to, “Work smart by having a plan, then outwork everyone,” adding, “Don’t let someone’s preconceived notions about you discourage you from reaching your dreams.”
