THE HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP TO HOST THE SECOND ANNUAL YOUNG LEADERS SUMMIT

Aug 13, 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA, August 5, 2019- The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), the nation’s largest nonprofit organization supporting Hispanic American higher education, with the support of Wells Fargo & Company (Wells Fargo), is convening the country’s top rising high school seniors from low-income, historically under-represented socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, for the second annual Young Leaders Summit (YLS) college empowerment program. The 2019 YLS will be held from August 7-11, at The University of Chicago. Wells Fargo is the Presenting Sponsor of this immensely impactful program.

YLS is a four-day program designed to serve a diverse cohort of rising high school seniors from low-income, historically under-represented socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, who earn their seats at the summit through a competitive application process, involving thousands of outstanding students invited to apply.

The Young Leaders Summit is planned and executed by HSF, in partnership with the Youth Leadership Consortium (YLC)— a group of organizations including the American Indian College Fund, APIA Scholars, College Board, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Jack and Jill Foundation, College Greenlight, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, who share the goal of ensuring that the families collectively served by institutions of higher education are representative of the diversity of the US population.

The program aims to give young leaders the practical tools they need to successfully apply to top universities, have full access to scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and set a course for academic and career success, through early introduction to in-demand fields. YLS also offers attendees the opportunity to experience living on a college campus, while interacting with college students, peers, and distinguished professionals who serve as mentors.

“Wells Fargo is honored to join HSF and YLC partners, in bringing the Young Leaders Summit to a group of outstanding high school students, the summer before their senior year,” said Walter Dolhare, Managing Director and Co-President, Wells Fargo Securities, LLC, and Member of HSF Board of Directors. “This will be a moment in these students’ lives when having access to the right information and resources, along with a network of high-achieving peers, can change the course of what happens next. We are confident that YLS is going to open doors!”

YLS was created to address the nationwide crisis of “under-matching” among talented high school students, particularly from underserved communities, where highly qualified students of modest financial means, miss available opportunities to attend our nation’s best colleges, because they assume these are out of reach, financially.

“We are looking forward to be able to offer the Young Leaders Summit for the second time,” said Fidel A. Vargas, President & CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. “We are fortunate that our longtime partner, Wells Fargo, has joined us in supporting outstanding students who happen to be from low-income households, that are missing opportunities to attend top-tier colleges, simply because they assume the cost will be too high. We know there are options and resources, and can’t wait to empower them with information and access.”
